Things That Didn’t Kill Me on Vacation

Just because it's sweet and has cheese in it, doesn't make it cheese cake...or good.

Note to chiefs in Turkey. It’s not ok to call any sweet dish made of cheese, “cheese cake”.

  1. Friendly Packs of Wild Dogs(Friendly may not be the best word here. Maybe apathetic…or well-fed. But either way they didn’t even seem inclined to chase me up a tree or rip me to shreds and that seemed pretty friendly as far as packs of wild dogs go.)
  2. A Jellyfish Bloom(Bloom is totally the right word (I looked it up) for the jillions of jellyfish I saw surrounding our cruise ship, although jillions may not be right.)
  3. Turkish Cheese Cake(While it was cheese, using the word cake was a bit misleading for a nasty bowl of hot cheese and crunchy noodle stuff covered in honey.)

Things that did kill me to be listed in a later post.

Writing Exercise:

From nine stories up the jellyfish surrounding the cruise ship appeared to be six inches across. I’m fairly certain that means that up close and personal (where I never want to be with jillions of jellyfish) they were the size of a kitchen table. It was creepy and beautiful all at once and it got me thinking of all the crazy things that exist in the ocean. (Prehistoric fish. Slimy worms/snakes that can grow thirty feet long. Fish that lure prey into their mouths with shiny lights.) Then I had to stop thinking because I get nightmares really easily.

I’ve always been a little afraid of sea creatures. Probably because my grandfather told me stories about wolf eels. He didn’t tell me the truth, that wolf eels are fascinating and rather harmless creatures (to humans). Nope, he helpfully told me that they were giant snakes in the ocean with the heads of wolves. (His stories may or may not be the reason I’m so prone to nightmares.)

Does anything in the ocean scare you? Do you dread giant squid or sharks? Do you shudder to think about the depth or the enormous creatures we haven’t even discovered? Spend a few minutes describing something frightening from the deep. (Then watch a Disney flick…it’s what I do to get rid of the nightmares after I stupidly rent a zombie flick.)  Happy writing.
